Ziyarah is an Arabic term which literally means "visit", and is used to refer to a form of pilgrimage to sites associated with Muhammad SAW, his family members and descendants, his companions and other venerated figures in Islam, such as the prophets, Sufi saints and Islamic scholars. Sites of pilgrimage include mosques, graves, battlefields, mountains, and caves.
Sunni scholars declare that the purpose of visiting the graves and cemeteries is only to remind people of death and not for taking the graves of the Prophets as places of worship.
“Visiting the grave is a duty which is performed for Allah's pleasure and visiting the grave of a father and mother on a Friday is appropriate.” Al Gazali, Ihya, IV, 711.

Since the early centuries of Islamic propagation, cities of Mawara' un-nahr (territory of present Uzbekistan), especially Bukhara, were repositories of Islamic written works. Imam al-Bukhari or Imam Bukhari was an Islamic scholar who authored the hadith collection known as Sahih al-Bukhari, regarded by Sunni Muslims as one of the most sahih (authentic) of all hadith compilations. He also wrote the books Al-Adab al-Mufrad.
The historian al-Dhahabi described his early academic life: “He began studying hadith in the year 205 (A.H.). He memorized the works of (‘Abdullah) bin al-Mubarak while still a child.
He was raised by his mother because his father died when he was an infant. He traveled with his mother and brother in the year 210 after having heard the narrations of his region. He began authoring books and narrating hadith while still an adolescent. He said, “When I turned eighteen years old, I began writing about the Companions and the Followers and their statements. This was during the time of ‘Ubaid Allah bin Musa (one of his teachers). At that time I also authored a book of history at the grave of the Prophet at night during a full moon.”
Abu Isa Muhammad at-Tirmidhi (824 – 8 October 892), often referred to as Imam at-Tirmidhi, was an Islamic scholar and collector of hadith who wrote al-Jami` as-Sahih (known as Jami` at-Tirmidhi), one of the six canonical hadith compilations in Sunni Islam. He also wrote Shama'il Muhammadiyah (popularly known as Shama'il at-Tirmidhi), a compilation of hadiths concerning the person and character of the Islamic prophet, Muhammad. At-Tirmidhi was also well versed in Arabic grammar, favoring the school of Kufa over Basra due to the former's preservation of Arabic poetry as a primary source.
